It’s official: Sophie Turner will be Lara Croft in Amazon’s new series!

We had already mentioned the possibility here, and now it’s been officially confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios: Sophie Turner has been cast to play our beloved archaeologist in a brand-new adaptation of the Tomb Raider franchise.

And to be honest with you, we’re still getting used to this choice. Why? Because most of our reference for Sophie comes from her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones (after all, we followed that series for years). Sansa was a more reserved and passive character, involved mostly in political and emotional dynamics, far from the kind of physical action that Lara demands. But hey, a real actress can take on any role, right? One thing is undeniable:

Sophie is beautiful and talented, just like the actresses who came before her.

Visually, she’s also not the kind of casting that immediately brings to mind the image of Lara from the games, but we know that can be a matter of time, adaptation, and getting used to it. In the end, what truly matters to us is seeing commitment and depth in this role, just as Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander delivered masterfully in their portrayals. Lara Croft is an icon, and we hope this new version will be able to connect generations, honoring the character’s essence while introducing her with strength and authenticity to a new audience.

Sophie commented on the challenge of stepping into such a major role:

“I’m beyond excited to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, and means so much to so many people, and I’m putting everything I have into this. Those are big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerful performances, but we (and Lara) are in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you to see what we’re working on.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the series’ creator, writer and executive producer, also shared her enthusiasm:

“I’m thrilled to introduce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara, alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not every day you get to make a series of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is deeply passionate about Lara, and just as bold, brave and hilarious as she is.”

Filming is set to begin on January 19, 2026, but there’s no premiere date yet.

Until then, we’ll be following every update closely, with excitement, of course, but also with that sharp, loving eye that only true fans have.

Wishing Phoebe all the best in crafting something truly epic, and to Sophie, that she brings her very best to deliver a Lara as captivating as the one from the games.
